Abstract:This paper explores the presence of hours constraints on the U.K. labour market (henceforth as: l-m.) with its effect on older workers labour supply. Based on panel data from 1991 to 2004, the results from a competing risks model show that over-employed (here as: o-empl.) male workers can freely reduce working hours with their current employer before complete retirement. However, some o-empl. women are observed leaving the l-m. early due to hours constraints. This suggests that more flexibility in working hours can increase the l-m. participation for some older workers.
