Abstract:Energy policy in New Zealand is examined using data on energy production and consumption and in the light of the changes that have occured in energy policy and planning. With the exception of the fact that imports of petroleum have indeed declined, the data on energy consumption and economic growth indicate that little has been achieved relative to the goals. The government has adopted a more market oriented approach, and crown corporations in the coal and electricity sectors have been established and privatization is now being considered. Integrated energy planning no longer exists and, it appears, the important goals set forth relative to the energy situation are no longer relevant.
