Abstract:The subjects of the article are postal service and government policy for mail receiving & forwarding services in European Union countries. The author discusses the progress in the liberalization of the postal service among European Union countries as of 2001. The author states that postal service can be claim to be the first state-run monopoly, its origins as a crown responsibility dating back to the 1600s and provides an overview of history of the postal service system and pays an attention to the reason for the need to restructure the postal service. The article considers the details of the compromise package adopted to open the postal service market.
