Abstract:Farm policies in industrialized countries try to stabilize commodity markets and regulate prices as well as revenues. The cost of these policies, and their benefit measured in the growth of production. Negative side effects since the 1970s, first of all the oversupply of farm commodities. French farm policy since the 1960s is analyzed including its relationship to the Common Market's agricultural policy for cereals and livestock. The latter's unexpected effects are printed out partly owing to monetary problems. French farmers benefit less than farmers in other European countries. This crisis and these policies have provoked strife among French farmer associations and unions. Social heterogeneity and regional variations are analyzed.
