Abstract:The paper discusses the isolation effects in situations involving taxes and public finance. It occurs when people focus on salient cues, ignoring others. The study conducted on the World Wide Web showed that subjects minimized or ignored the longer-term or indirect effects of tax policies. They preferred "hidden" taxes to transperent ones, failing to think who would ultimately pay. Moreover, when they were prompted to think about indirect effects, their preference for hidden taxes was reduced but not eliminated.
