Abstract:Shortcomings of some - one-to-one MBO programs are examined. Because of the emphasis on individual motivation and goals, MBO programs often fail to recognize the potential value of using intact work teams in the goal-setting and review process. The history of the MBO literature is reviewed to see why the one-to-one approach dominates. Some important concepts of Lewin, Drucker, McGregor and Likert are analyzed. A logical progression in the theories is demonstrated. Barriers to Team MBO include: comfort, skills, time requirements, traditional values, autocratic managerial control, reward systems, conflict avoidance. Two conditions required for a successful team approach are mentioned.
