Abstract:The story of the British micro-computing company is characterized by the growth and management problems of small firms operating in a rapidly growing product market. Choices made by the founders and early managers close off options and create a set of internal constraints which shape the future development of the company. Reasons are adduced that in a subsequent period of rapid growth, it is difficult to adjust the structure and culture of the company to the rapidly changing environment. This is clearly illustrated by reference to events at Acorn Computers.
