Abstract: | Within the electronic industry computer-aided design plays a significant role in the development of printed circuit boards and very large-scale integrated chips. This is a fertile area for operations researchers. The productivity of the assembly process can be maximized. Significant cost savings is demonstrated in a study for a medium sized electronic firm. Modelled as a type of rural directed postman problem, it is shown that for particular insertion arm movements, an efficient optimal algorithm exists for the problem's solution under certain conditions, and that, in a more genaral setting, it can be solved heuristically with a guaranteed performance. |
