Abstract:The major European operators, Germany's Bertelsmann, Luxembourg-based CLT, Italian Silvio Berlusconi, Germany's Leo Kirch and France's Canal+ are supposed to have formed strategic alliances. But this does not bear the test of scrutiny. Media moguls are competing on three fronts: expanding their control of broadcast outlets, programme libraries, and advertising sales.
