Abstract:Prevention, recycling and reuse, and the safe disposal of non-recoverable residues are the priorities defined in EC's strategic paper. Future trends outlined in the article include the trend toward privatization of municipal collection services, collecting on a wet-dry basis supplemented by igloos or bins for selected recycables such as glass and paper. During the current decade, the volume of Municipal Solid Waste disposed of in landfills will decrease and landfill tipping fees will increase. Composting is today the only alternative to incineration or landfilling. Anaerobic digestion will replace composting as the preferred technology for the biodegradable fraction of the urban waste stream. Inciniration capacity will continue to increase on the Continent. The future of recycling is hazy.
