Abstract:Design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA), and its implementation with simultaneous, or concurrent engineering practices, has made steady progress over the past decade. The benefits of application of DFMA have been fully documented in terms of simpler product structures with reduced part count, lower product cost, reduced defect rates , higher reliability, lower costs and shorter development cycles. However, with these improvements it should not be forgotten that the most difficult aspect of DFMA implementation was gaining acceptance of the technology by the design community.
