Abstract:A review of the machine tool industry, based on the example of Yamazaki of Japan that set up a factory in Worcester, the U.K. to produce CN controlled lathes and machining centres. The author argues that the U.K. structure is a reflection of events in the US, the fact that U.K. firms use many Japanese components, and the trend could be small and medium sized firms being replaced by more concentration and transformation and more Japanese market penetration.
