Abstract: | In the USA, approximately USD 80 billion is spent annually to manage solid waste disposal. In 1986, the nation generated 157.7 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW). 80 percent ends up in landfills, 10 percent is incinerated and 10 percent is recycled. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported a national goal of achieving a 25 percent reduction in solid waste by 1992. Plastics, while making up only about 7 percent of MSW by weight, occupy 20 percent by volume which severely strains landfill capacity. The primary focus of the problem of plastics MSW is polystyrene. They have been used for food packaging. A joint task force was formed to developed new options for reducing polystyrene packaging. |
