Abstract:The paper studies the managers' and employees' views on the employment relationship. There is a gradual, yet noticeable shift taking place in the expectation patterns between both parties and new ways of managing people are starting to emerge. The article identifies two approaches, which have previously been considered subsets of HRM, but are considered possible replacements for it in the future. The two approaches are "transaction-based management of people"(TM) and "professional-based management of people"(PM). The article furthermore contrasts traditional HRM practices against these new approaches. Empirical research in form of a survey among Dutch mangers was conducted to examine these issues.
