| Abstract: | The off-course booking industry consists of 8,440 betting shops in which customers staked £7.1bn in 1999. Betting shops are evenly distributed throughout the country and are with in walking distance of their customers' homes and work places. New distribution channels, offshore telephone betting and Internet betting are developing to an extent that could put up 1,800 betting shops out of business. |
