| Abstract: | Botswana is one of a small group of countries - virtually the only one in Africa - that has sustained rapid economic growth over an extended period. In the past 30 or so years, Botswana's real per capital income grew by more than 7% a year - an achievement that puts it in the same superleague as Thailand and Korea. The high growth rate, facilitated by mineral wealth, was carefully nurtured by a disciplined fiscal policy and a coordinated programme of economic restructuring aimed at lessening reliance on income from diamond mining by broadening other sectors of the economy such as agriculture and manufacturing. |
