Abstract:The study examines whether the prominence (here as: prm.) of immigration (as: imm.) and the integration (as: intgr.) of minorities (as: minrs.) in news coverage reflects real-world developments (here as: r-w-ds.) or whether it is dependent on (political) key events (as: k-es). The direct effects of r-w-ds. and k-es. are compared in Dutch newspapers from 1991 to 2002 on the prm. of issue coverage. It is indicated that events have a more direct impact on the attention given to imm. and the intgr. of minrs. in the news. In addition, it is found that international events have a direct, but temporary effect, while most institutional national events influence media attention permanently.
