Abstract:This paper analyzes the impact of perceived expectations (here as: expts.) and uncertainty (as: uncrty.) on investment (as: inv.) spending in small and large firms. Based on Dutch firm level data, analyzed are two types of inv., that is, aggregate inv. and inv. in energy-saving technologies. It is shown that expts. and uncrty. about input and output (here as: i-and-o.) prices and domestic demand have substantial but different effects on inv. spending in firms of different sizes. In addition, it is found that at least for small firms, there are important differences btw. the effects of uncrty. about i-and-o. variables.
