Abstract:A strategy is derived heuristically which is believed to be nearly optimal at craps, in the sense of maximizing the probability of reaching a specifized goal. Then it is proved rigorusly, with the aid of a computer, that this strategy is superior to bold play on "don't pass", regardless of the ratio of one's initial fortune to one's goal. It is shown that chances of winning can be improved by taking advantage of certain fair side bets that are available in the game of craps. The analysis assumes inifitely divisible capital and no betting limits.
