Abstract: | A learning organization, or L-form, is distinctly different from a traditional multidivisional, or M-form, organization, but little is known about its organizational design. In this article, one of the first structural approaches to learning organizations is presented. The approach includes six elements of organizational design: strong leadership, egalitarian cultures, integrating mechanisms, dispersed strategies, horizontal structures, and knowledge workers. These elements are connected through a learning organization web and a supporting framework. The 4 Bs framework underscores the assumptions of beliefs, balance, boundarylessness, and behavior that give a learning organization its transformational capacity. It argues that the L-form is needed to achieve the collective and learning properties. |
