Abstract:Most of the well subscribed general management programs (GMPs) teach the same very wide range of topics: functions and techniques instead of what a general manager's job involves. Taxonomy of general management tasks based on a rising manager's career path is presented containing the following six levels: new graduate, constructive subordinate, specialist section head, specialist department head, co-ordinator of several specialist department heads, company strategist and board member. Incombent's general management tasks at each level and dominating vectors in GMPs for each role are discussed. Characteristics of the "ideal" university business school are listed.
