Abstract:The article is an analysis of ten poems written between 1913-1915 and dedicated to architectural monuments of St.Petersburg. Livshits' image of the city is formed by a superposition of two St.Petersburg myths: that of culture against elements, granite against the Neva River, and the swamp and that of the West against the East, rational order vs. organic chaos. The message of the superposition: the mutiny of elements and Russian Asia could only be tamed and balanced by culture and the rationality of Europe.
