Abstract:In Zavolzh'e there remained an ancient Slav and Indo-European ritual of crawling or walking around Lake Svetlozar beneath which in accordance with a legend the town of Kitezh was hidden to avoid Tatar invasion. In parts of Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro rings of cloth, thread, candles and other materials and objects are tied to churches and crosses. These rituals are manifestations of the cult of the dead. The semantics of encircling is interpreted as giving strength, power, improving fertility. In several Slav languages the same symbolic meaning can be traced in words that originally had the meaning of belts, rings, circles.
