Abstract:So willfull, the Dow Jones industrial average. It escapes last year's despair, dramatically recovers from an 82-point single-day fall in May, and runs relentlessly up to close at 4736 on July 17, an all-time high. The next three days the Dow tumbles a total of 178 points, only to dust itself off and charge upward again. So far this year, the Dow has gained an extraordinary 23%. Along the way it has snubbed such traditions as paying a decent dividend and chased a pied piper called technology. In turn it's been pursued by omnivorous mutual funds, some of whose investors are convinced that a share of the wealth is no less than their brightright. This market is almost human , albeit begging for a psychoanalyst's couch.
