TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY

Abstract:The telecommunications industry has developed rapidly in Malaysia since 1970, with intensified export-oriented industrialization. Despite this, however, demand continues to outstrip supply, producing long waiting lists for telephone and other services. If the country is to fulfil its strategic vision of becoming a newly industrialized economy by 2000, telecommunications services will have to be significantly expanded. The sector will have to be further liberalized to increase the extent of competition in the value added network and enable more responsive reactions to free market forces. Foreign investment in particular should be encouraged.
