The transformations carried out by Peter the Great included the introduction of new symbols. The imperial heraldry comprised St.Andrew's cross, the cross of Constantin, a crossed sward and key. These were the main attributes of numerous symbols which in accordance with the baroque style of the epoch could have differing meanings and had an important role in the myth of St.Petersburg.
