Abstract:Despite an increasing number of man-made accidents many companies persist in the belief that such disasters cannot happen to them. In the USA, where business is more aware of the cost of such events, a new industry of crisis management is gaining credence. Some USA universities have begun to carry out research and training in crisis management. One centre aims to help in the identification of early warning signs of crisis and to change corporate culture so that people at all levels constantly monitor recognized dangers. Errors in complex high technology systems are inevitable and should be planned for. The human error myth is used by those with inadequate control systems.
