Abstract:Even though it has been recognized that cross-trained work-force is effective managerial tool for bottleneck problems, most of the past research has been performed in evenly loaded shop. New labour assignment rules are developed in a bottleneck environment. Four dispatching rules are tested. A one-way analysis of variance is used to test the significance of labour assignment decision for each dispatching rule. For the statistically significant variables, a test was employed for each combination of dispatching rules, performance criteria, and level of transfer time to examine the relative performance of job assignment rules.
