Abstract:In the wake of regionwide democratic transformations, Eastern Europe (EE) has entered a critical period of political turbulence, economic restructuring, and social dislocation that should precipitate domestic and international instability during the next decade. Several types of transitional systems have emerged during the past year in the late Soviet block. The pace of economic transformation in EE is analyzed and it is stated that growing EE diversity will also be increasingly evident in the process of "internationalization", as each state pulls away from the Soviet grip. The decomposition of communist regimes, the thaw in East-West relations and the withering away of the Warsaw Pact provide a wider margin of maneuver for small and medium-size states.
