Abstract:This article indicates that group members' affective expressions have a significant effect on the relationship between trust and cooperation. First, a scenario experiment (n=80) showed that low trusting individuals were more willing to cooperate when confronted with group members who express high activation affective states, while for more high trusting individuals cooperation was not contingent on other group members' affective expressions. Second, a laboratory experiment (n=78), using a social dilemma paradigm, replicated these results and showed that this influence is explained by the extent to which others are expected to cooperate.
