| Abstract: | In 1949, the Chinese Communists closed all public securities markets in mainland China and established a banking system which became the sole institution of Chinese finance for the next 40 years. Now, in the "post-Mao era" and Deng's waning years, China has begun to rethink its financial system and build a small market for debt securities. The writer traces the history of the Chinese credit markets and analyzes the current state of credit-based capital in China, particularly the primary and secondary debt markets. |
