Abstract:In the 1980's, corporate culture emerged as a central theme in management and organizations studies. Corporate culture was promoted by the gurus of excellence and endorsed by exponents such as HRM and TQM. This article subjects the corporate culture literature to critical scrutiny. Specifically, the paper critiques the 'doublethink' contention that autonomy can be realized in monocultural conditions that constrain opportunities to wrestle with competing values and their associated life projects.
