Abstract:Despite a long tradition of documenting unethical practices in organizations, the sociology of organization literature has seldom addressed the question of management ethics. One of the earliest studies, Dalton's (1959) 'Men who Manage', did try to come to terms with the moral aspects of management behaviour. Thus a textual analysis of Dalton's work offers the opportunity to examine its interpretive dynamics and moral judgments to evaluate their implications for our understanding and practice of morality in management.
