Abstract: | This article searches factors that are strongly related to success in project-based cultural industries. Two key dimensions of movies' success (commercial success and artistic merit) are highlighted. A sample of Italian films are analysed in order to explain how authenticity and artistic merit are manufactured in the movie industry. It is suggested that commercial success is favoured by a director's strong vertical ties with producers and distributors and economic reputation, whereas artistic merit is positively related to a director's weak horizontal ties with other creative partners and artistic reputation. |
