Abstract:Managers (hereafter as: mgrs.) make decisions on the types of employment (as: empl.) structures meeting the firm's needs, while workers (here as: wrks.) make choices regarding the types of arrangement meeting their needs. This paper reports research investigating management (here as: mgmt.) decisions to use self-employed contractors or employees for particular jobs, and wrks' decisions to seek organizational empl. or self-employment. Some 80 in-depth interviews were conducted with mgrs. and wrks. across two industries (energy supply and engineering consultancy) for studying two groups of wrks. differing in skill levels. While largely confirming existing theory on the mgmt. conditions relevant to the contracting-out of work, the study identifies factors making a contracting relationship more mutually beneficial.
