Abstract:This paper presents new findings that differ from Mintzberg's classic study of top managerial behaviour. It is shown that nowadays top managers face a much larger workload, their contact pattern tend to be to a larger extent oriented towards subordinates in group-settings, they focus on giving information and they spend less time with administrative work. Previous findings indicated that fragmentation was a central tenet in managerial work. However, this was not as prevalent in the new study. The author also found similarities between the two studies: claims of the emergence of a radically different managerial work are much exaggerated. It is shown that new work-practices are combined with older practices.
