Abstract:The multi-dimensionality of conflict (hereafter as: cnfl.) with its paradoxical effects on decision making has been sought to explain by research. This study deals with teams seeking the benefits of cognitive (task) cnfl (here as: c-cnfl.) while simultaneously avoiding the costs of affective (emotional) cnfl (as: a-cnfl). These two types of cnfl. often occur together. Research has provided few explanations as to why this happens or guidance as to how it can be avoided. This paper provides empirical evidence that c-cnfl. can contribute to a-cnfl. As a result, by encouraging c-cnfl., teams may inadvertently provoke a-cnfl. Provided is evidence that behavioural integration can ease this tendency.
