Abstract: | In literature, contextual processes are often overlooked when discussing organizational learning, innovation and product development. This study builds on organizational knowledge creation theory (Nonaka, 1994). The main object is to provide a holistic view of contextual innovation and knowledge creation process. The paper describes a case of mobile internet innovation at the Japanese telecom company NTT DoCoMo. The essential concept is ba, an interlinked system of shared contexts. In the case, three key managers succesfully create and organize ba that enables the combination and open flow of diverse knowledge leading to the creation of i-mode mobile internet product. In addition, the paper discusses managerial implications and limitations. |
