Abstract:This review paper provides a systematic and integrative framework for understanding business groups (hereafter as: b-grs.) which are the primary form of managing large business organizations outside North America. It is argued that existing theoretical perspectives of b-grs. pay attention to four critical external contexts: market conditions, social relationships, political factors, and external monitoring mechanisms. Each of these contexts draws from a specific theoretical perespective. B-grs. adapt to these external forces by deploying various internal mechanisms along two key dimensions: one focuses on the distinctive roles of the group affiliates and the other focuses on coupling and order btw. the parent firm and its affiliates. Based on these two dimensions, developed is a typology of b-grs. forms: network (N-form), club (C-form), holding (H-form), and multidivisional (M-form).
