Abstract: | Directors with human capital (hereafter as: h-cap.) are often assumed as the most influential board members (here as: b-mbrs). However, based on a survey of all the b-mbrs. in 14 companies, it is found that ties to others in a network of strong ties among those meeting outside of board meetings were more important predictors of social influence than h-cap. or ties across boards etc. These results support a social capital perspective on influence emphasizing relationships with others on the board as important factors in the social dynamics of board decision-making. |
