Abstract: | Managers are confronted by intra-organizational networks of practice (NOPs) with a dilemma: NOPs must be managed to reap benefits from integrating geographically dispersed knowledge. However, the emergent nature of NOPs implies that management control may frustrate practice-related knowledge to be shared. This paper develops a model disentangling the dynamics underlying this dilemma, based on a case study of 22 NOPs in a geographically dispersed development organization ('TDO'). Specifically, four dynamic relationships are interrelated, involving four kinds of embeddedness, that is, organizational, in practice, relational, and structural, that relate dynamically to knowledge sharing in NOPs. Each of these relations can be influenced by interventions in both the content shared in the network and the connections among network members. |
