Abstract: | This paper examines a firm's decision to enter new markets (here as: mks.) as related to the breadth and depth of its experience and the relative distance of the mks. in the context of the venture capital (VC) industry. It is explored whether and when the United States (U.S.) VC firms enter five high-technology investment mks. through first- or later-round investments. It is found that VC firms overall are less likely to enter distant mks. Those with broader experience are more likely to make first-round entries. Furthermore, VC firms with deeper investment experience are more likely to make first-round entries in proximate mks. and less likely to enter distant mks. and make later-round entries. |
