Abstract: | The UK government traditionally used the electricity supply industry to support a nuclear programme which cost some 40 billion pounds in current prices to produce expensive electricity, and also to support British Coal. The creation of a privatized and competitive electricity supply industry exposed the inadequate performance of these undertakings, and they could not be sustained in a competitive market. The government's energy policy is now to rely on the market to provide an efficient and diverse energy supply for generation. |
