| Abstract: | This paper examines how the announcement of pit closure in 1992 and subsequent developments in the coal industry have changed and narrowed the range of available privatization options. The longer-term economic forces shaping the industry's prospects and the effects of the 1992 announcement and subsequent events are analysed and the alternative models of privatization both before and after the 1992 announcement are evaluated. Problems are likely to arise whichever structural option is chosen for the sale of British Coal. |
