Abstract:This article examines how the higher education reforms in England possibly affect the participation level of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Recent research evidence is analysed concentrating on costs, debt, and term-time working. It is found that better financial support would encourage students to continue studies and to choose better institutions. The levels of debt were found to be linked to family background and poorer students had the largest debts after leaving the university. Finally, students working term-time may achieve less academically.
