Title:Long-term trends in educational inquality in Europe: Class inequalities and gender differences

Abstract:Based on data from seven European countries (that is: France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden), this study analyses trends among women in class differences in educational attainment over the first 2/3 of the 20th century. Educational attainment is compared between men and women (henceforth as: m-and-w). It is asked whether class differences among the two sexes are similar (or not). It is also questioned whether trends in class differences over birth cohorts have differed btw. m-and-w. Among others, it is found that, as expected, over the 20th century, inequalities btw. m-and-w. in their educational attainment have declined notably (with some country-specific exceptions). Patterns of class inequality were also mostly similar for both sexes with some exceptions. This study's key finding of a decline in class inequality in educational attainment for both m-and-w. diverges the 'persistent inequality' in education claimed to exist by earlier scholars.
