Abstract:The article claims that direct manipulation causes focusing bias and thus, when integrating several information sources, the attributes that influence preferences can be manipulated. A study is conducted in which students and staff from Oxford University had to make decisions on savings and investment risk, as well as observe future financial consequences. When risk-related variables were removed, participants saved less and took more risk. In case of contrast between manipulating and observing choice attributes, decisions seem to be based on the manipulated attributes.
