Abstract:This article studies how problem framing by research and development groups, in particular the extent of problem decomposition, impacts knowledge replication processes conducted through the use of virtual simulation tools (VSTs). It shows the results of a comparative study of two research and development groups working on the design of hybrid propulsion systems. Generally it is found that several factors affect the granularization of the design space adopted by R&D teams; there are technical competences, complementary assets, and strategic objectives. It is also shown that different degrees of decomposition of a problem can affect how knowledge is replicated inside R&D groups.
