Abstract:Using a dynamic stochastic union model, it is shown that firing costs have a small and ambiguous impact on the level of employment if the union precommits to future wages. It is argued that commitment-like equilibria are more likely in bargaining environments (herein as: b-env/s.) featuring social pacts at the aggregate level and cooperative industrial relations. Thus, theoretical results suggest that these traits of the b-env/s. interact with employment protection legislation in a labour markets performance improving manner. There is provided evidence on OECD countries which is consistent with this prediction.
