Abstract:This article investigates whether retirement mutual fund providers from the US adhered to the Investment Company Advertising Rules assumed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 953 retirement mutual fund magazine advertisements from 2004 to 2010 were analysed based on SEC's guidance. Although the readability of advertising disclosures was generally not very good, they had all required information according to standards. The article discusses implications for consumers, marketers and regulators in the context of financial literacy and consumer welfare.
